Quirky and beguiling, often unwittingly funny, and always so utterly kind, the people of the Greek island of Sifnos charm and fascinate. They roar past on motorbikes with whole families squeezed on top, plus whatever earthly goods they can manage to hold on to. They live their lives in the open, their shouts, their squabbles, and their laughter in plain view of anyone who takes the time to notice. Open-hearted and spontaneous, they ply strangers with countless gifts… ... and, impromptu, they invite a passing traveller to their wedding. Filled with encounters and observation, gentle humour, and more than one unforeseeable twist, The Sifnos Chronicles is a narrative tale that takes readers along on this traveller’s journey through whitewashed alleys, into homey tavernas, across ancient marbled paths through the hills, and ultimately into the heart of this magical isle.

The Sifnos Chronicles tales from a greek isle Sharon Blomfield 9780994933300 Books Reviews

I read this book recently over a period of about 3 weeks. No it's not a hard read, in fact very easy, it was just a very traumatic and difficult time in life and I sincerely thank the author for producing such an ordinary book. I mean that in the most positive way, no great dramas, no sadness or over the top exciting events, just 2 people exploring an island and interacting with it's people and that is an excellent way to discover where one may wish to travel to next.
It kept me grounded, thanks Sharon.
This book will have you booking a trip to Greece. The characters of Sifnos are the stars of this book as they go about their daily lives. With a keen eye for detail and character, a talent for turning a phrase and the ability to capture a moment, the author paints pictures with words that allows readers to embark with her from the ferry and spend some time on the island of Sifnos. From an unexpected invitation to the mystery of disappearing stew, The Sifnos Chronicles is a delight to read. Be warned though, don't start the book if you have something important to do the next day, because you'll be reading well into the night.
The author takes us along to the island of Sifnos, as she and her husband immerse themselves into daily life and lore. We follow along on their adventures, attending a wedding, local events, adapting to Greek life, and falling in love with the people as well as the landscape.

If you can’t get to Sifnos, this book will take you there. It’s a delightful look at how the Greek islands enchant. This story is yet another example of that power once you are under Greece’s spell, you can’t stay away. Stories like these make me love Greece even more because I am reminded how special it is, captivating even those who aren’t Greek. I have young kids; adventures like these are out of my reach right now. Thus, I will live vicariously through these stories. Pick up a copy of The Sifnos Chronicles. You’ll delight in this ode to a lovely Greek island.
This wonderful travel memoir is a delight to read. Readers will absolutely feel like they are physically on the island of Sifnos with the help of Sharon's exquisite descriptions of the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of the Greek isle. Sharon takes the reader on a journey through her own experiences of mad Greek drivers, squabbling neighbours and copious amounts of food and drink.

Nicely paced with a gentle easy flow, each chapter introduces something new and inviting about the island and it's inhabitants and the warmth that comes not just from the scorching sun.

From the moment Sharon recalls her first steps off the ferry the reader is immersed in a culture that is both amusing and bemusing, and the little black and white pictures dotted throughout the book add to the reading experience.
If you have ever been to Sinfos this travel narrative will bring back magical memories, and if you haven't been you will be wanting to book your ticket before the last page has even been turned!

This is a truly lovely read and a great debut novel from an author who is sure to have further literary success in the future.
